Exposure to bloodborne pathogens due to accidental needlestick injuries or splashing of body fluids is the greatest problem faced by health care workers. Despite the relative safety of the modern health care setting, physicians, nurses, and other frontline care providers who directly interact with patients are exposed to serious and potentially deadly conditions, including hepatitis B, HIV, and tuberculosis. A proactive method to counteract the incidence
of sharps injury is the use of approved safety needles and syringes, as outlined by the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard of 1991 and revised by the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act of 2000. Prior to the approval of such legislation, up to an estimated 600,000 workers came into contact with contaminated blood or other body fluids due to a sharps injury, on an annual basis. Although no device that comes into contact with a patient’s body fluids provides perfect protection, the use of Food and Drug Administrationapproved safety devices is a step toward mitigating the risks to which health care workers are susceptible.
