The U.S. market for plastics in medical tubing is continuing to experience a steady growth, which began over sixty years back. Plastics are the dominant tubing materials for fluid administration, drainage tubes, catheters, respiratory and anesthesia devices, dialysis equipment, and peristaltic pump tubing. Customized tubing is a common feature in this market where, each unit of tubing consists of two or more resins. The medical tubing market is very much relationship oriented. The relationship shared between the resin manufacturers, extruders, medical device manufacturers, and the end users, play a key role in deciding the fate of the market. Very few extrusion houses operate with a wide variety of materials. Most of them operate in niche applications such as catheter tubing or peristaltic pump tubing, to name a few. As majority of the catheters involve high-performance polymers, extrusion becomes a technically demanding task. As a result the same extrusion machinery cannot be used for manufacturing all kinds of medical tubing. For example, to manufacture fluoropolymer catheter tubing, a more advanced extrusion facility is required compared to that required for manufacturing PVC surgical drainage tubing. Thus, in order to avoid large investments on extrusion machinery, a majority of the extrusion houses focus on niche medical tubing applications.
Based on the type of polymer used, the medical tubing segment can be divided into:

■ Polyolefin (mainly polyethylene)
■ Polyurethane (thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU))

■ Styrenic block co-polymers (SBC))

■ High-performance polymers (fluoropolymer, PEEK (Polyetheretherketone), Pebax)
Based on end-user application, the market has been segmented as:
■ Fluid administration tubing include basic fluid administration tubing, blood transfer tubing, drug delivery tubing, infusion tubing, dialysis tubing, and IV(Intravenous) tubing used for fluid transfer.
■ Drainage tubing include surgical drainage tubing, fluid, and blood drainage tubing.
■ Catheters include cardiovascular, urinary, neurovascular, and venous-access catheters.
■ Medical gas administration
