The research covers the region of Western Europe, which covers the EU-15 countries plus Norway
and Switzerland. All industrial (workplace) applications of PPE are included. Products that are
therefore not included are the likes of the following:
• DIY and leisure (such as the purchase of ear plugs for light sleepers)
• Dedicated military products
The majority of companies who sell their brand of above the neck PPE in Europe are still what would traditionally be classed as "manufacturers." A small number of companies have outsourced most of their manufacturing (to contract manufacturers), although this is the exception rather than the rule.
• In general, most of the large scale manufacturers do not sell directly to the end-user, but rather sell through an importer or distributor. Distributors mostly operate on a regional level, where they supply within one country. However distributors could be:
• National distributors, Regional distributors or Specialist distributors.
