The past few years have seen sustainability initiatives emerging universally as one of the key topics of debate and action for companies across a varied range of industries from IT to manufacturing. This has thrown a lot of challenges to the existing ways in which companies operate, and also immense opportunities for companies that have been early in detecting this changing shift for 'greener' products, and have armed themselves with a wide catalogue of products that enjoy such credentials. There has also been a clamour towards claiming environmental sustainability and benefits of even existing products, which hitherto have not been marketed based on their green credentials. Case in point includes such traditional plastics as cellulose based ones, which despite having been around for more than a century, are now re-branded as ecofriendly bioplastics. Whatever might be the approach that companies take to this trend, this has certainly emerged as one key aspect of the global markets that companies can ignore only at their own peril. This paper uncovers the various trends that are emerging in the global Performance Materials industry towards ensuring its sustainability and the opportunities and pitfalls that lie ahead for companies operating in this segment.
