Increasing Tourism Coupled with Rising Consumer Affluence Promotes Growth of the Bottled Water Market in Singapore
Singapore has a strong tourism industry and the increasing number of tourists ensures steady consumption of bottled water as a majority of travelers are usually cautious and typically purchase bottled water when they are abroad. The Government’s decision to approve the set-up of two casinos is further expected to boost tourism and increase the potential market size of bottled water in Singapore.
Moreover, increasing affluence, busy lifestyles, the need for convenience of Singaporean consumers, and the greater emphasis placed on health, which will make consumers choose bottled water over carbonated soft drinks are likely to further market growth. "Greater awareness and sophistication of the average Singaporean consumer is expected to lead to better product differentiation and the market for functional and flavored water is expected to grow as a result of this," notes the analyst of this research service. "Apart from product differentiation, product positioning, stronger retailer relationship, and building and sustaining brand presence are expected to attract customers."
Greater Competition can Lead to More Brand Variants
The growth in the market can be illustrated by the small and medium-sized beverage companies penetrating the still bottled water market, both international and local. "The manufacturing of bottled water offers relatively higher margins than other packaged beverages, and is therefore attractive to new entrants, that are mainly the companies in food and beverages industry tapping into this market," cites the analyst. "This is likely to intensify competition and to lead to a greater number of brands in the market."
However, due to scarcity of land and high water conservation tax, most still bottled water companies entering the Singaporean market do not directly manufacture their products in Singapore, but rather have their plants in other countries, or utilize OEMs.
